MSHA Safety Initiatives
Brian Goepfert, Administrator for Mine Safety and Health Enforcement
Brian began his MSHA career in 2000 as a mine safety and health inspector and currently serves as administrator for mine safety and health enforcement. He has held a variety of positions during his career, including field office supervisor, assistant district manager, acting district manager, chief of safety, deputy administrator, regional administrator, director of education policy and development. Originally from Wisconsin, Brian earned a bachelor’s degree in safety management while attending the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He now resides in Florida and enjoys boating and sending time outdoors with his wife.

Veronica Eliasson, PhD

Colorado School of Mines
Veronica Eliasson is an associate professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Colorado School of Mines. Dr. Eliasson obtained an MS degree in Vehicle Engineering and a PhD in Mechanics from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, Sweden, under Prof. Apazidis.
Dr. Eliasson then spent two years as postdoctoral scholar at the California Institute of Technology working with Profs. Rosakis and Dimotakis. In 2009, Dr. Eliasson joined the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department at University of Southern California as an assistant professor. In 2016, Dr. Eliasson joined the Structural Engineering Department at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Eliasson is the 2020 recipient of the F. Zandman Award through the Society of Experimental Mechanics.
Dr. Eliasson’s research interests are multi-disciplinary and range from shock wave dynamics to fracture mechanics — all explored relying on a strong foundation of experimental mechanics coupled with different types of ultra high-speed photography techniques. Dr. Eliasson is passionate about promoting research experiences for diverse groups of high school students, undergraduate students and graduate students through participation in laboratory experiments.

Workforce Solutions
Brian Turmail, Vice President Public Affairs & Strategic Initiatives, Associated General Contractors of America
As Vice President of Public Affairs and Strategic Initiatives, Brian Turmail’s role is to develop and oversee all public, member and chapter communications activities for the 27,000 member construction trade association. He works directly with national, regional and local media to generate coverage of the construction industry and AGC’s major policy priorities. He is also helping oversee the implementation of the association’s Centennial “Future Focus” plan designed to position the association to help member firms thrive amid the significant technological, process and labor transformations taking place within the industry. He also plays a lead role in organizing AGC of America’s workforce development initiatives. And he is a member of the board of directors of AGC Charities Inc, the association’s charitable arm, where he oversees Operation Opening Doors projects that get volunteer contractors to renovate facilities for worthwhile groups, including veterans and members of the disabled community. Turmail resides in Washington, D.C.
